Every year, the first week in November is dedicated to raising adoption awareness with the Humane Society's National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week. According to Derek deLouche, the director of resource development and marketing at the Humane Society, recent years have shown "public attitudes shift, spay/neuter rates go up and more cats with permanent ID, like tattoos and microchips – which help pets to find their way home if they ever get lost or separated from their owner."
In addition to making sure your own animals are safe, pet lovers can help support the Humane Society by donating or volunteering with the organization or other local organizations. Sharing breed information with potential dog owners is another important contribution. This is because it helps ensure that people are choosing the right dog for their lifestyle — our handy breed selector quiz also helps with that! If you're not very active, for example, it doesn't make sense to get a dog that needs to be walked for several hours every day. You also probably don't want a barking dog guard in a busy apartment building. Doing research before getting a dog will put an end to shelter surrenders.
If you're interested in adopting a specific breed for a dog rescue, there are several organizations in Canada that fit the bill. These are organizations that are dedicated to finding the right homes for dogs that deserve a loving home. We recommend meeting the dog before you commit, however. Two dogs that are the same breed can have very different personalities and you should make sure that your adopted dog works with you and your family.
