Wire Fox Terrier Overview

The Wire Fox Terrier is a handsome, master show dog. A favourite of the Westminster Dog show, a breed that has won a record number of 13 times, Wire Fox Terriers are elegant, athletic companions. When groomed properly, they have absolutely stunning beards too. They were originally used as hunting dogs, going back as far as the 1700s in Britain. This hunting past is why they have all-white coats—if any reddish colour appeared, they may be mistaken for the foxes they’re trying to chase out of hiding. Wire Fox Terriers have V shaped ears folded over very neatly, a wiry, tough coat, and small dark coloured eyes. They are personable, full of personality, which shows on their expressive little faces. For a family dog, they are great with kids. Wire Fox Terriers are friendly, love to play, and all around pretty upbeat. They still have a bit of that prey hunting sense in them and they are a little independent. Training requires a bit of work but they can become a lovely, comedic, long-lasting companion nonetheless.

Wire Fox Terriers enjoyed a boost in popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with one appearing in six Thin Man movies featuring star William Holden.

Dog Food

Feeding your Wire Fox Terrier

Wire Fox Terriers need to be fed a high-quality dog food—perhaps even home prepared if approved by a vet. Some dogs are at risk of obesity and this is especially true of smaller breeds. Monitor their intake and watch the amount of treats provided during training sessions. Wire Fox Terriers should have a couple of small meals throughout the day on a schedule with fresh, clean water always on hand.

*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
