Staffordshire Bull Terrier Overview

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, much like its bigger cousin, the American Staffordshire Terrier, has a bit of a brawling, brutal past. These stocky, muscular dogs with sly-looking, clown-like smiles, once participated in blood sports in 19th century England. Dogs were bred specifically for gruesome matches; fighting dogs with a punishing, heavy jaw from a Bulldog with the spirit and quickness of a Terrier.

Thankfully, as these practices have been outlawed for almost two centuries, and breeding and care have turned the Staffordshire Bull Terrier—also known as the Staffie—into a more mild-mannered companion who is very good with kids.

Staffies have a tight-fitting, short coat and come in a variety of colours and patterns. They have a thick, broad head with very pronounced cheek muscles. (And, again, an alluring little smirk looks like they are up to something clever or fun.)  They aren’t as tall as their cousin the AmStaff. This shorter, stocky pup is still courageous, smart, and really happy.

Did you know?

The Staffie arrived in North America in the 1880s where breeders sought out a bigger type of bull terrier and thus created the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Feeding your Staffordshire Bull Terrier

A Staffordshire Bull Terrier needs to be fed a high-quality dog food. It’s important to not overfeed your Staffordshire Bull Terrier — obesity is a key concern for some dogs but it’s always good to take precautions. They require a couple of meals throughout the day on a schedule with some fresh, clean water.

*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
