Training your Shetland Sheepdog puppy will be both fun and rewarding. These loyal pooches are smart and love to show off for their owner. After you welcome your puppy home, socialization, housetraining and basic obedience training should start right away. Shelties do best with firm but gentle instruction and should pick up on concepts quickly. Commands like sit, down, stay and walking on a leash are easily grasped. As always, you should never punish your pal or use harsh words and actions. Shelties are talented pups who can learn a variety of things including tricks! It's important to have fun and take advantage of their abilities. Try teaching your buddy how to roll over, play dead or shake a paw. Sitting for a treat every time gets boring—don’t be afraid to shake things up! You can also train your Sheltie for herding, tracking, agility, guarding or watchdog. Remember to keep your training sessions short and use plenty of encouragement, repetition and treats to get the job done.
Healthy puppies will have clean ears with no signs of discharge, redness, inflammation or pungent odour. If the puppy is aggressively scratching or pawing their ear, tilting their head or excessively flipping their head, it may also be a sign of discomfort. Breeds with floppy ears are more prone to infection or disease.
