Norwegian Elkhound Overview

The Norwegian Elkhound is made for big things. This is a dog breed that can hunt big game like moose and bear. They’re loyal, independent and confident. Picture this dog at the side of a Viking and you get the idea.

Their Scandinavian heritage means that they prefer cold temperatures and love to jump around in the snow. Their beautiful, smooth silvery grey coat helps them blend into winter landscapes like natural camouflage. However, you’ll always know where they are because a Norwegian Elkhound loves to bark and tell their owner that it’s time to play. This is a boisterous dog, not very well-suited to apartment living in the city. They just love being part of a pack which makes them a great family dog—you just have to make sure they don’t think they are the leader of your clan.

This isn’t an eager-to-please type of pup. They have an independent streak that owners should respect. If you want a cuddly couch potato, a Norwegian Elkhound probably isn’t the dog breed for you. They need a lot of exercise so their best with active people that are up for some adventure. Athletic, eager and bonded to their owner, the Norwegian Elkhound will be a great companion both indoor and outdoor.

One of Europe’s oldest dog breeds, Norwegian Elkhounds were discovered in Viking burial grounds.

Feeding your Norwegian Elkhound

This is an active dog that needs two hearty meals a day. You should make sure that you’re feeding them the right amount for their activity level, or else obesity is a risk. They love treats and will give you the cutest look with those intelligent brown eyes to sucker you into giving them more and more. Because their more motivated by food than affection or toys, they can take up residency underneath your dinner table waiting for scraps. Maintaining discipline with their diet will make for a healthier dog long-term.
