The Norwegian Elkhound is made for big things. This is a dog breed that can hunt big game like moose and bear. They’re loyal, independent and confident. Picture this dog at the side of a Viking and you get the idea.
Their Scandinavian heritage means that they prefer cold temperatures and love to jump around in the snow. Their beautiful, smooth silvery grey coat helps them blend into winter landscapes like natural camouflage. However, you’ll always know where they are because a Norwegian Elkhound loves to bark and tell their owner that it’s time to play. This is a boisterous dog, not very well-suited to apartment living in the city. They just love being part of a pack which makes them a great family dog—you just have to make sure they don’t think they are the leader of your clan.
This isn’t an eager-to-please type of pup. They have an independent streak that owners should respect. If you want a cuddly couch potato, a Norwegian Elkhound probably isn’t the dog breed for you. They need a lot of exercise so their best with active people that are up for some adventure.
