Leonberger Overview

There’s a good reason the Leonberger is affectionately known as the “Gentle Giant” of dog breeds! These friendly, tenderhearted pups may be extra large (in some instances, weighing the same as their humans!) but they’re definitely not mean and are more likely to be seen wagging their tails happily than growling.

They don’t have to be aggressive—their size does the talking for them. Bred in Germany as powerful farmhand workers and companions, Leonbergers do best in homes where they have room to spread out and roam. Generally they make better country dogs than city dogs. While they are sweet and friendly to most everyone who greets them, their soft patience is mostly lavished on their families, as they can be sensitive and emotional dogs.

With a big dog comes a big heart. Leonberger owners have been known to say that family arguments can make a Leonberger express sadness or distress, and they don’t do well when they are left alone for long periods of time. Keeping your Leonberger surrounded by love and busy with activity will make for a happy and healthy pup.

Did you know?

Because of their courageous nature and webbed feet, they make excellent water rescue dogs and are often used as such on police rescue teams.

Feeding your Leonberger

Leonbergers need food with high-quality protein to keep up with their active lifestyle.Try to avoid food with artificial sweeteners, flavours or colouring. Adults eat three or four cups of food every day, depending on how many calories they burn. Leonbergers can be prone to gaining weight so watch how much you’re feeding yours. Dogs should always have fresh drinking water available to them.

*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
