Training your Flat-Coated Retriever Puppy is a fun bonding experience, and because this breed is slow to mature it is important to get the basics down early. Teach your puppy to play fetch by starting in a small enclosed area, hold a small soft toy in front of them, and then give a light throw. Their retrieving instincts will take over and this can become the basis for the rest of your training and your friendship. Flat-Coated Retriever puppies are prone to a really nasty habit of coprophagy. This is the most polite way possible of saying, they eat their own poop. Be sure to start training this habit out of them as soon as possible.
Healthy puppies will have clean ears with no signs of discharge, redness, inflammation or pungent odour. If the puppy is aggressively scratching or pawing their ear, tilting their head or excessively flipping their head, it may also be a sign of discomfort. Breeds with floppy ears are more prone to infection or disease.
