Flat-Coated Retriever Overview

If you are looking for a fun loving companion that’s full of life, look no further than the Flat-Coated Retriever. Often called the Peter Pan of the dog world, Flat-Coats mature more slowly than other breeds and keep up their fun loving, puppyish attitude well into their old age. If you’re looking for a mean guard dog or an aloof breed, you won’t find it here. Get ready for a lifelong bond full of jumping, romping and tail wagging!

Because they’re big, friendly, exuberant kids themselves, Flat-Coated Retrievers are a great fit for growing families. They’re an outgoing and friendly breed that is never happier than when they are with people or other animals. That said, there’s rarely a time when a Flat-Coated Retriever isn’t happy to begin with!

Bred as duck-hunting dogs, an active outdoor lifestyle suits them best. Their boundless energy and playful demeanour makes them more suited for the country or suburbs than life in a big city apartment. This breed may love to have fun, but that doesn’t make it untrainable. Flat-Coats are intelligent, quick learners and love to please their owners. There’s never a dull moment with a Flat-Coated Retriever, having one of these big loveable pups in your life is sure to keep you young!

Did you know?

Goldens may be the most famous retriever these days, but up until the end of World War I, Flat-Coated Retrievers were the world’s most popular sporting dog.

Feeding your Flat-Coated Retriever

Flat-Coated Retrievers are an active dog that requires a lot of high protein fuel to keep them running. When looking for a quality dog food, be sure to look for products with whole animal products and avoid ones with terms like “animal byproducts”. Flat-Coated Retrievers are a fun and fancy free breed and when it comes to food, they don’t always know when enough is enough. Be sure to split your Flat-Coat’s food into two meals to prevent bloat - a potentially serious problem for dogs their size.

Footnotes
*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
