English Setter Overview

The English Setter is a gorgeous, mellow working dog. It has a sweet, merry temper, and the most divine eyes, you could so easily get lost in them. As beautiful and charming as they are, English Setters are also sturdy, solidly built dogs.

The English Setter goes back almost 400 years to the British Isles. They are believed to be the result of cross-breeding between Spanish Pointer, large Water Spaniel, and the English Springer Spaniel. English Setters were bred to “set,” which really means sit very quietly, while hunting game, mostly birds.

English Setters have a long, graceful neck. Their coat is unique, speckled, with colours like liver, lemon, and orange. (Each colour imagined like the most delicious meal or dessert.) English Setters have an innate elegance to them but they are also boisterous and playful. They are all-round great dogs to have, good with families, people, and other dogs.

Did you know?

When English Setters were brought to America, and gained popularity, they were more commonly known as “gundogs.”

Dog Food

Feeding your English Setter

English Setters need two meals per day of a high-quality dog food—perhaps even home prepared if approved by a vet. Some dogs are at risk of obesity and that is especially true of the English Setter. They love to eat, hunt for food, wait for food—they basically live their lives around food. Be careful leaving any leftovers or table scraps within reach because an English Setter will gobble it up! Monitor their intake and watch the amount of treats provided during training sessions. English Setters should have fresh, clean water always on hand.

Footnotes
*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
