The Collie is a herder by day and pop-culture star by night! This is a best of both worlds dog breed that is intelligent, graceful and friendly. The stunning Collie was first found in the Highland Regions of Scotland. Although it was bred as a herding dog, today it's a pampered family pet. Collies are well behaved with children and aren't a one person type of breed, they in fact love everyone. They welcome anyone as their friend, but they still show their herding roots — don't be surprised to find your Collie herding guests, kids, neighbours, you name it! They can be very protective of their family, which makes them excellent watch dogs. They will bark and bark and bark at strangers, but tend to not become aggressive. These smarty pants are also known to be good assistant and therapy dogs. The quick and agile beauty loves to work and needs quite a bit of exercise. Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour of walking, running, or playing in the backyard is a good start. Since Collies are easy to train and quick to learn, they're also talented at agility, coursing and obedience. Collies are people dogs and want to do activity with you. It's not a good idea to leave it outside alone for a long period of time and expect it exercise — but when it comes to a game of fetch, they're all in. When given the opportunity to burn their energy, Collies can come inside to make a calm companion. Their sweet, gentle, and loving nature makes them the perfect family pet.

Good nutrition is the first step to a Collie's healthy skin, luscious coat, and general well being! They're not usually picky eaters and well-balanced diet is necessary for good health. They can do well on a variety of foods, ranging from dry kibble to wet premium options. Following the breeder's suggestions is usually best. The recommended daily amount is approximately 2 - 4 cups of kibble per day. It's a good idea to divide the amount into 2 meals daily, or more frequent meals when it's a puppy. Collies have a tendency to put on a few pounds as they age, so you should watch the diet and carefully regulate.
