Chinese Shar-Pei Overview

The Chinese Shar-Pei is an adorable lump of wrinkles begging to be pet to by those they trust. Often wary of strangers, the Shar-Pei can make a loyal companion and watchdog to a dedicated owner. The Shar-Pei originates from ancient China where it was a fighting, hunting and guard dog. Today, the Shar-Pei enjoys the simple life of being a man's best friend. This unique breed is notorious for its wrinkled face and body. Most people choose this dog based off their appearance. They have a blue-black mouth with a scissors bite, and little brown eyes that often get sunk in the sea of wrinkles. Looks aside, they're intelligent, playful and courageous, but also very dominant. Very devoted to their masters, this breed is proud, independent and strong willed. Shar-Peis can be territorial with unfamiliar faces and aggressive towards other dogs. Its heritage as a guardian and fighter make it an excellent watchdog, so much so it must learn not to over protect. For this reason, it's crucial to socialize your dog from an early age. With strict and consistent training, a Shar-Pei can make a good family dog with older children. Shar-Peis are best suited for a family that respects its independence—this is not a dog that wants to cuddle up! If you aren't one for affection, and want a fierce and loyal protective pooch, you may have met your match!

Feeding your Chinese Shar-Pei

Chinese Shar-Peis are big dogs who need a diet that features good quality protein. The recommended daily amount is approximately 3 cups a day. It's a good idea to measure the food and feed it during set meal times. Shar-Peis should eat twice a day to keep their stomach satisfied. Since Shar-Peis are a large breed, it won't be difficult to find a selection of good foods that meet their needs. Look for products rich with meat based proteins, healthy fats, and vitamins. As always, how much food your dog needs is dependent on their age, metabolism and activity level.

*Contrary to popular belief, there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs. There are breeds, however, that have non-shedding coats and are suited well to allergy sufferers.
