Cane Corso Overview

The Cane Corso is a big beauty that is intelligent, imposing and intimidating! Standing 28 inches tall and weighing over 100 pounds, it is sure to make you second guess approaching it. This is an old Italian dog who's lineage dates back to ancient Roman times. Bred to work, Corsos were used as guard dogs and hunted big game such as wild boar. They also herded livestock to the market, and almost went extinct with the modernization of the farm in the 20th century. Today, Corsos still take role protecting their loved ones very seriously. While it is fond of family, it doesn't care for strangers or other animals if they aren’t familiar. In fact, it can be quite defensive and aggressive. For this reason, socializing it with many people and places is very important. Corsos tend to have an even and stable temperament, but they like to take charge. The best suited for this breed is someone who is going to be in control. Corsos are sure to push the boundaries and test limits, so it may not be the best choice for a first time owner. At the same rate, they're generally composed and can do well with children and other dogs if closely supervised. In spite of their stubbornness, they always come around to please their people. It’s a good idea to keep your Corso on a tight leash—both in life and at the doggy park!

Feeding your Cane Corso

A well-balanced diet with high-quality nutrients is vital for a healthy Cane Corsos. The essential ingredients for their diet are protein and fats. Like most breeds, Corsos choice of protein is meat, and aren't usually picky which kind! Beef, lamb, chicken or fish are all great options. Choose a kibble that contains limited artificial flavoring and preservatives. The recommended daily amount is three to five cups, divided into two meals daily. As always, their diet will vary on their age, health, metabolism and allergies. With less skin around their lips than most Mastiffs, you won’t have to clean up nearly as much slobber when it’s meal time!
