The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized flushing and retrieving dog. Boykin Spaniels sit somewhere between the compact size of Cocker Spaniel and a Springer Spaniel. They have a solid brown coat, ranging in liver to chocolate. They have large, feathered ears.
Boykins were bred in South Carolina in the early 20th century. A hunter by the name of Alexander White found a brown Spaniel who was very astute with water retrieving. With this, Boykin sought to create skilled at flushing, water retrieving, and big bird game hunting. And so Boykin Spaniels are the result of crossbreeding between a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, and an American Water Spaniel. Boykins have an abundance of energy good for working in the water or in the field, but they often left that behind when they entered the home, remaining tender and docile at night.
Boykins are merry, mellow, and make for a good house dog. They, of course, love going to the lake and any water; playing, hunting, generally stomping around. They are reasonably trainable considering their innate sense to hunt. They are very sweet-natured and good to have around families with kids.

Boykin Spaniels need two meals per day of a high-quality dog food. Some dogs are at risk of obesity and that can be especially true of smaller dogs like the Boykin Spaniel. Be careful leaving any leftovers or table scraps within reach of a Boykin. Monitor their intake and watch the amount of treats provided during training sessions. Boykin Spaniels should have fresh, clean water always on hand.
