Since Aussies are such workaholics, your puppy will be so excited to start training. It helps to use positive reinforcement techniques like clicker training, followed up by a treat, of course. Since Aussies are such smart dogs, it won’t take long for them to grasp basic commands like sit, stay and come. It’s also important to socialize your Australian Shepherd early. You can start doing this at around seven weeks. Take your puppy with you on walks through different neighbourhoods and places that allow dogs. It helps to do short training sessions often. If trainings sessions go on too long, the dog can lose interest.
Aussie ears are triangular, of moderate size and set high on the head. At full attention they break forward and over, or to the side. Healthy puppies will have clean ears with no signs of discharge, redness, inflammation or pungent odour. If the puppy is aggressively scratching or pawing their ear, tilting their head or excessively flipping their head, it may also be a sign of discomfort. Breeds with floppy ears are more prone to infection or disease.
