The Malamute is known for its pack hierarchy behaviour, so establishing yourself as the alpha in your home is crucial for successful training. Start food training your Malamute puppy the day you bring it home. Your puppy should always eat after you, as does the lowest member in the pack’s pecking order. You should also start obedience training your pup at eight weeks. Malamute puppies are very smart and will easily get bored with drill-based training! It’s best to train your Malamute with a combination of positive reinforcement (praise/treats) and appropriate discipline and corrections. Dog halters are also useful tools for training Malamutes, as they don’t interfere with the dog’s instinct to pull against pressure on their neck.
Malamute puppies are born with folded ears which will eventually become erect within six months. Some puppies’ ears will become erect much sooner. Healthy puppies will have clean ears with no signs of discharge, redness, inflammation or pungent odour. If the puppy is aggressively scratching or pawing their ear, tilting their head or excessively flipping their head, it may also be a sign of discomfort. Breeds with floppy ears are more prone to infection or disease.
